Betony

Be on the look out for the vibrant pink – purple flowers of betony in grassland and meadows from June until to October. This perennial wildflower is a real favourite with bees and other important pollinators.

Betony

Plant family: Lamiaceae
Aliases: Bishop’s wort, common hedge-nettle, purple betony, wood betony
Flowering period: June – October
Flower colour: Deep pink
Preferred soil type: Most types, dry, acidic
Habitat: Grassland, hedgerows, roadside verges, undisturbed field margins
Status: Common

General information

An erect, herbaceous, perennial wildflower of the mint family, it’s often found growing in grassy places, especially hedgerows, field margins and open woodland. It can be an indicator of ancient woodland and healthy habitats. Growing to a height of 60cm, betony will grow on most soil types and thrives in both full sunlight and partially shaded sites.

Value for wildlife

A terrific plant for pollinators, attracting bees, especially bumble bees, butterflies and moths, providing a valuable source of pollen and nectar during the late summertime.

Uses for betony

Betony has a history of medical use, breathing difficulties, such as asthma and bronchitis, headaches, heartburn, gout, stress and epilepsy are amongst the conditions and ailments treated.
